Project Overview

Oceans Aware organises a wide variety of programmes focusing on increasing the public’s understanding of sharks through education and awareness. Our programs offer both a theoretical and practical insight and may be customized to accommodate groups of all ages.

Project Includes

  • Lectures highlighting shark biology and the imperative need for conservation *
  • Lectures pertaining to the ground breaking white shark research conducted by the Oceans Research team in Mossel Bay *
  • Shark dissections: a unique educational and visual experience illuminating the fascinating  anatomy of a shark **

* Lectures are also available via Skype conferences

** The sharks utilised for educational dissections are obtained from the dead by-catch of commercial fishing vessels. We do not support fishing activities which target shark and rays species.

Oceans Aware | Educational Projects in Southern Africa

Based in South Africa, Oceans Aware is an organisation dedicated to raising awareness of the marine environment by empowering people of all ages and all nationalities with vital knowledge and skills. Our projects include The Shark Lab, an aquarium in Mossel Bay which also hosts Meet the Sharks, a successful education project. Our other educational projects include our University and Group Lectures, and the upcoming web-based educational software, Pinnacle Island.
