Mossel Bay Internship | Oceans Aware

Oceans stands as a multidimensional organization uniting world-class marine researchers, conservationists, ocean enthusiasts, educators, interactive developers. Oceans Aware, created in 2009, serves as the educational and community based division of Oceans and was formed to make marine scientists and their fascinating research and discoveries more accessible to individuals who share a common passion for the marine environment. Limited in their capabilities to induce positive change, our marine scientists have teamed up with schools which act as a catalyst to provide a powerful voice to its youth and advocate for positive change. Aware strives to preserve our marine ecosystems by actively addressing environmental issues through various programs focusing on empowering and educating children, our future academic, political, and economical leaders.

Oceans Aware Internship

Summary of Internship

Hand in hand with Oceans Aware’s current educational outreach program, “Meet the Sharks”, has recently launched its first internship program based in Mossel Bay. Aware is currently seeking interns who share a passion for the environment and who have an optimism to help to improve the condition of our oceans and conservation of marine species. The main objective of this internship program is to enrich the lives of others by educating and inspiring children that traditionally do not have opportunities to go into higher education or learn about the marine environment. Participants in this internship program will have the opportunity to improve and possibly change the lives of the children they work with by encouraging them to make positive choices and changes for their community and for the environment.

Scope of Internship

Aware is seeking motivated interns who seek the opportunity to gain in depth experience teaching underprivileged South African school children, by going out to the individual schools in the Mossel Bay area and enriching their curriculum with your new training. This training will help you develop a clear understanding of our work here at Oceans as well as solidify your passion and knowledge about sharks and the ocean, by experiencing the beauty of the shark species firsthand.

As part of the training interns will increase their experience by participating in white shark research trips, collecting data from shark dissections, aiding in research projects on shark fishery and management, taking part in our shark aquarium husbandry and maintenance protocols, as well as giving guided aquarium tours. You will learn/review basic ecological, biological, and conservation issues, by preparation of the materials you will provide to schools.

Why this Internship is different:

Besides being able to spread environmental awareness in today’s world, by being part of this internship program you will increase your knowledge and experience in teaching, you will be a part of one of the most ambitious research teams in the world (www.oceans-research.com), experience South African culture firsthand, and last but not least, you will be able to nourish education to underprivileged South African children.

We invite applications from all students and enthusiasts who have a passion for educating the youth and want to help raise awareness about problems sharks and our oceans are facing; although these qualifications are not required, we do highly recommend these skills to be eligible:

Students currently enrolled in an academic institution, studying towards teaching science or with science as an educational major; or graduated students with a minimum degree in education or science; or educators with experience in environmental education
